Terrorists have killed a famous lawyer in Imo State, Southeastern Nigeria.
The victim, Chinedu Nwowu, was shot by gunmen on Wednesday, PREMIUM TIMES gathered.
This happened in Mgbidi, Oru West Local Government Area of the state.
Sources told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Nwowu crossed twice with the bullets while driving on Mgbidi road.
The victim hails from Mgbidi Community, which shares a border with Omumma, another area of the council.
The NBA closes the courts
The Orlu branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed anger over the incident.
Chukwuemeka Okoro, an employee of Orlu NBA where the victim was, announced in a letter issued on behalf of the branch that the lawyers under the branch will meet on Thursday (today).
Mr. Okoro said that the meeting, which is following the killing of his friend, will be held inside the main court of the government.
“Following the gruesome killing of one of our own, Chinedu Nwowu, last night in his town, Mgbidi, all lawyers of the Oru/Oguta Forum are hereby informed of a very important emergency meeting this morning at 10 am at the High Court, Mgbidi.
“The High Courts of Mgbidi, Oguta and Omumma will not sit today (Thursday),” he said.
The chairman of the NBA branch, Ben Amukamara, told journalists that the courts in Oguta, Mgbidi and Omumma Areas of the state were not allowed to sit on Thursday (today) in protest against the killing.
Mr Amukamara explained that the lawyers, at the meeting on Thursday, will discuss the killing of their friend by terrorists.
Henry Okoye, the police spokesman in Imo State, did not respond to calls seeking comment.
Mr. Okoye, who is the Deputy Commissioner of Police, has yet to respond to the message sent to him as described.

Most of the time these threats target security agencies, government officials and workplaces.
The Nigerian government has accused the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being responsible for the violence in the region. However, the group has repeatedly denied any involvement in terrorism.
IPOB is the group leading the agitation for the independent state of Biafra, which wants to draw from the South-East and other parts of South-South Nigeria.
