Katsina, Nigeria – Former President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that he is now dependent on borrowed money from one of his two houses in Kaduna State to sustain himself, maintaining that he has not brought himself through fraud during his eight years as Nigeria’s leader.
Buhari made the disclosure on Thursday while addressing the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Katsina State at the State House in Katsina. The meeting was held ahead of the state council elections scheduled for February 15.
“Nigeria is a difficult country to govern”
The former president highlighted the challenges of governance in Nigeria, saying that most citizens are not aware of the challenges faced by leaders.
“Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but many Nigerians do not know that. Until you are in charge of the country, you will not understand the challenges,” Buhari said in Hausa.
He said he feels healthier and looks better now than he did during his tenure, which he said has been acknowledged by many who have seen him recently.
Buhari Denies Illegal Wealth
Buhari has strongly denied allegations of corruption during his tenure, saying that no one can accuse him of corruption because of his ill-gotten wealth. He disclosed that he has only three houses: one in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, and two in Kaduna State.
“After eight years as the state president, I have only three houses; one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I have given one to borrow, where I get money to eat,” he said.
The former president urged Nigerian leaders to prioritize transparency and accountability in office, stressing the need for ethical leadership.
Governor Radda Calls for APC Mobilization
In his speech, the Governor of Katsina state, Dikko Radda, urged the APC workers to gather support in all areas before the state elections. He stressed the importance of having an electoral process that reflects the will of the people.
“We are committed to making decisions that reflect the true will of the people,” Radda said in a statement issued by his Executive Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed. He called on party leaders to get votes in their local government areas to ensure that the APC wins.
A Simple Inheritance
Buhari’s revelations about his meager lifestyle and reliance on borrowed money have sparked discussions about his legacy and the expectations of Nigerian leaders. Known for his strict lifestyle, Buhari is often praised for his discipline, although critics question the effectiveness of his anti-corruption campaign.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with governance challenges, Buhari’s call for transparency and accountability serves as a reminder of the importance of ethical leadership in building public trust and driving national development.
