    Malam-Fatori, Borno State – January 25, 2025

An attack by Boko Haram on the 149 Battalion military base in Malam-Fatori, the capital of Abadam state in Borno state, has left 20 Nigerian soldiers dead, with many still missing.

This, which took place on Friday, January 24, 2025, lasted for several hours as the militants entered the site with armored vehicles, which filled the army. Sources confirmed that several buildings and work vehicles were destroyed during the fighting, forcing survivors to retreat.

The town of Malam-Fatori, located on the border between Nigeria and Niger Republic, is home to thousands of refugees fleeing the Boko Haram insurgency. The insurgents are said to be aiming to target security positions as they continue to carry out attacks, which have left massive destruction in their wake.

Among the people who were killed were a military commander, two officers, and a medical officer. The source indicated that several soldiers were seriously injured, while the number was unknown as of Saturday.

The attack in Malam-Fatori comes after another attack by a group of insurgents on the military’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State. The incident, which happened over the weekend, left unidentified soldiers dead and others missing.

A source who spoke about the Damboa attack said, “25 Taskforce Brigade was attacked with many casualties. So far, we have recovered more than 7 bodies.”

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which has grown in strength since the death of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, claimed responsibility for the attacks. In its statement, ISWAP shared photos of its members attacking the army, highlighting the growing situation in the Lake Chad region.

Terrorism, which has plagued Nigeria for more than a decade, has killed more than 100,000 people and left millions homeless, mostly in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe. Although the Nigerian military has repeatedly claimed that the insurgents have been largely defeated, recent events paint a very different picture of the ongoing war.

The attacks highlight the challenges the Nigerian military is facing in fighting insurgency and the need for continued efforts and efforts to secure the region.
